Premature infants are babies who are born before they have reached full term in their mother's womb. Full-term pregnancy is considered to be 37 weeks, but a baby can be considered premature if it is born at any time before 34 weeks of gestation. Premature birth can lead to various health problems for the newborn and may require special care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
